In the pink

Every October, the world takes on a rosy glow as fashion and beauty companies create products to help fight breast cancer. The array of offerings this year is vast - from a $1.99 package of Post-it Notes to a luxe Cartier watch. The products pictured here - and this is just a sampling of what's available - are being sold to benefit a number of breast cancer-related research funds and charities. What a great excuse to shop!

Breast cancer survivor Lori Rae Silver, a Long Beach jewelry designer, created this whimsical variation of the well-known symbol. The flip-flop pendant is $15.

Designer unveils breast cancer pendants

In 2002, jewelry designer Lori Rae Silver's life took an unexpected detour when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Today Silvers is cancer free and is determined to help educate others on the importance of early detection in the fight against breast cancer.

Lori Rae, a Long Beach resident, has created an unusual and lighthearted piece of jewelry as an appealing variation of the pink breast cancer ribbon. The piece is an expression of her experience with her illness and is dedicated to the sisterhood of women who share in the experience. Lori Rae's piece can be purchased for $15.00; a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a breast cancer foundation for research, education and awareness.

"I designed this stylish piece as a subtle remiinder to give hope to others in the battle against breast cancer," said Silvers. "I hope that my contribution will help others stricken with disease to have the opportunities I did for a successful recovery."

Born into the gold and diamond business, Lori Rae was drawn to the decorative and performing arts. After following her passions as a figure skater and dancer, Lori Rae used her arts education and began a lucrative career in jewelry design. Her elegant and simple designs that flow with movement and color soon developed asuccessful following with an impressive clientele.

Lori Rae's work has been features in many national publications and fine boutiques and stores around the world. Her pieces have appeared on several soap operas. Lori Rae left the fast paced life in Manhattan eight years ago and moved to a home in Long Beach with her husband. Many of Lori Rae's designs are inspired by her love for the ocean.
